Township Traffic-Calming/Pedestrian Safety Initiatives

Mayor Bernie Platt’s administration considers the well-being of residents on foot – particularly children – to be a top priority, whether they’re in a neighborhood, near a school or place of worship, or venturing through a commercial district.

With that in mind, each year, the Mayor’s Office works closely with the Cherry Hill Police Department to set aggressive pedestrian-safety plans that include significant investments in technology and enhanced communication between the Mayor’s staff, the Traffic Safety Unit, and residents within Cherry Hill’s neighborhoods.

In the last year, the CHPD has acquired several pieces of technology that promise to enhance our existing traffic-patrol capabilities. Among them: the purchase of new radar-based speed counters; electronic speed signs that alert motorists to how fast they’re traveling on a given roadway, and laser speed detectors for use by patrolmen. Additionally, the Township has added three new radar-equipped, unmarked vehicles to the patrol fleet specifically for use by the Traffic Safety Unit, and increased patrols in targeted areas where we enforcement is shown to be most needed.

A number of new stop signs were installed around the township in early 2011, including new signage at the intersection of Cranford Road and Astor Drive in Woodcrest – a move that resulted directly from the community’s feedback. The CHPD continues working with residents daily to identify and address areas of concern. And as the year progresses, the Department of Public Works is coordinating with the Police Department to complete nearly 5,000 feet of crosswalk painting and other road striping to further improve navigability and awareness of traffic laws on our roads.

These combined efforts have resulted in a significant enhancement to the safety of non-motorists at dozens of municipal intersections, Platt said.

“On behalf of my administration, the CHPD, our DPW, and our roster of dedicated school crossing guards, I’d like to express appreciation to everyone who reached out to the Township to advise us of their pedestrian and traffic-calming safety concerns,” said Platt, following the spate of roadway safety improvements. “We heard you, and we responded – and you can rest assured we’ll do it again next year.”

For more information on our traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety measures, call Mayor Platt’s office at (856) 488-7878. To report a traffic-safety concern, call the CHPD at (856) 665-1200.
