Grant Received To Improve Five Stormwater Basins In Cherry Hill

Five locations in Cherry Hill will soon receive stormwater drainage improvements, thanks to a state grant.

The five stormwater basins to receive berms and other upgrades to improve stormwater flow are:

• Surrey Place East, off Longstone Drive between Kilburn and Apley Drives
• Bunker Hill, off Bunker Hill Drive near Heron Road
• Springdale Road, near Springdale Farm Market
• Cherry Run, off Brick Road and East Patridge Lane
• Country Walk, off Country Walk Road

The $171,000 grant received from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will be used to improve five of the stormwater basins addressed in the recently approved Cooper River Regional Stormwater Management Plan. 

As a partner in the project, the Cherry Hill Department of Public Works will assist with construction. Also, CHEAC will assist with water sample collection, public environmental education, and vegetation planting. The work is expected to start in the summer and be completed by 2009.

“I am extremely proud of the dedication and commitment of Cherry Hill’s Department of Public Works and the Environmental Committee to help improve Cherry Hill’s environmental initiatives,” said Mayor Bernie Platt.

The project aims to help Cherry Hill comply with its Municipal Stormwater Management Plan. Stormwater basins can reduce the impact of development by reducing the runoff of rainwater, improving water quality treatment, and allowing rain to seep into the ground to recharge aquifers and reduce pollution in runoff. The basins can also produce wildlife habitat, create locations for wildlife observation, and promote opportunities for residents to get in touch with nature.

“CHEAC will be enlisting the assistance of community members, youth groups, and all others interested in helping with vegetation planting, and conservation education,” noted Lew Gorman, CHEAC’s Chair.
