Mayor Platt
signs climate protection agreement
Cherry Hill
Mayor Bernie Platt, at the encouragement of CHEAC, recently
signed the Cherry Hill Climate Protection Agreement, endorsing
the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.
About 400
mayors from across the country have signed up to participate in
the agreement, including 25 mayors from New Jersey. Further,
earlier this year, Governor Jon Corzine signed an Executive
Order pledging to reduce New Jersey’s emissions 20 percent by
2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
In the Cherry
Hill agreement, Mayor Platt urges federal and state government
to enact policies and programs to improve efforts to reduce
global warming pollution levels. This includes reducing the
United States’ dependence on fossil fuels; accelerating
development of clean, economical energy resources and
fuel-efficient technologies; and increasing fuel efficiency
standards for motor vehicles.
The agreement
also urges the U.S. Congress to pass bipartisan greenhouse gas
reduction legislation that includes clear timetables and
emissions limits and a flexible, market-based system of tradable
allowances among emitting industries.
The agreement
indicates Cherry Hill Township will strive to meet or exceed
Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution by
taking actions in its own operations and community. |
